But what I liked best of all was how Nicholas treated Georgiana. Full disclosure, I’m not a cat person, but that did not stop my amusement.īoth Georgiana and Nicholas are truly likeable characters. The cats named Judyth, Blanche and Cat-Head were influential characters in their own right. And when you throw in Georgiana’s cats, there is so much comedy ahead. Nicholas Rokesby - neighbour and family friend - offers to marry Georgie, but this offer is definitely unappealing to both, and so begins a back-to-front courtship. Georgie Bridgerton has been unfairly enveloped in scandal. I mean, I LOVE a good arranged marriage trope as much as the next person, but this was a delight! Quinn writes banter like no other, and the verbal sparring between Georgiana and Nicholas is a thing of beauty. First Comes Scandal is the final book of The Rokesby series by Julia Quinn. He is originally from Kent, childhood friend of Georgiana’s but his father believes he MUST marry Georgiana as soon as possible. ![]() Wherein comes Nicholas Rokesby, all the way from medical school in Edinburgh, Scotland. As we know society wasn’t exactly understanding when it came to women in the late 1700s. Poor Georgiana has been ruined by a truly awful man, Freddie Oakes, and despite standing her ground and doing nothing wrong, society judges her harshly. ![]() ![]() ![]() Puzzled, Evans is then ushered into a conference room to be videotaped in front of a mock jury, wondering how much of what he believes about climate change is actually true. No, it’s the “ theory that increased levels of carbon dioxide and certain other gases are causing an increase in the average temperature of the earth’s atmosphere because of the so-called ‘greenhouse effect,’” answers the litigator (102). It’s not, as he initially thinks, the “heating up of the earth from burning fossil fuels” it’s not, as he next guesses, the “heating up of the surface of the earth from the excess of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere that is produced by burning fossil fuels” (102). ![]() This is the question that a litigator asks protagonist Peter Evans in State of Fear after Evans provides several imprecise definitions of global warming. “When you have a strongly held belief, don’t you think it’s important to express that belief accurately?” (103). ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The thing with magic in stories is you have to set-up rules and parameters. The construct itself isn't too complicated but how it can or might work is.Īdditionally there are a lot of players in this book (seven turnkeys alone before we add in other ghosts and the Nazis) and while the language is very simple and well written for the 9-11 age range I still had a hard time keeping track of who was who. ![]() The four points above AND the magical construct that Rushby has created to tell her story from. ![]() Turnkey has to establish two things quickly for the reader. However the plot was complex and it concerns me that it's took much for the average 9-11 year old.ĭelving into the plot of Turnkey the reader needs to understand a few things:ġ) The Nazis were the 'bad guys' (easy enough)Ģ) They have levels or ranks of military (not too bad)ģ) They are trying to win a war by overtaking London (tolerable) and,Ĥ) They believe that mystical spirit magic can do this.(here's where it gets tough). The concept overall was really interesting and it was a fast paced book. Ghosts or spirits that keep everyone in their cemetery safe and at rest. Allison Rushby does this by creating cemetery grave keepers, if you will. Marketed as a middle grade book The Turnkey of Highgate Cemetery (Turnkey) is ambitious to take on the difficult topic of WWII and how to explain the complexity to children. ![]() ![]() ![]() Actions certainly speak louder than words and Paige uses that to her advantage in her story telling. There is no internal narrative regarding Glinda unlike with Dorothy, nothing to make her somewhat sympathetic, so there continues to be an outside opinion if her that forges itself based on the actions and decisions that Glinda takes. Glinda appears one way but taking a closer look at who Glinda is. This Glinda is so different than the previous incarnation of her because it plays a lot with falsettos. The interesting aspect of the novella isn’t how it’s written buy rather how it’s constructed and how Paige decided to reconstruct Glinda. The Witch Must Burn takes a look at the most wicked witch of them all: Glinda of the South through the gaze of Jellia, the leading housekeeper in the Emerald Palace.
